The world’s only 5-time National Banjo Champion
Gary “Biscuit” Davis is a world-class musician and banjo expert. He holds a total of five National Banjo titles and is known throughout the world for his accomplishments.
Gary’s experience speaks for itself. He played for Dolly Parton for more than 20 years and spent much of that time as her band leader. He was a staple at Dolly’s Stampede and Dinner Pre-show, has performed in Dolly’s Kin folks Show at Dollywood, as well as the park’s Smoky Mountain Jubilee and has played all over the world, with recent tours in Australia, Asia, and Europe.
A phenomenal and sought-after instructor, Gary’s students have often also become masters of their musical crafts; they learn quickly in an environment that caters to both their musical tastes and their learning styles. Specialties are three-finger-style banjo, Scruggs, and acoustic methods.
Gary is skilled in acoustic, bluegrass, country, jazz, western, and western swing styles.
Gary "Biscuit" Davis began playing banjo at age ten. He was Tennessee State Champion by the age of twelve. Since then he has been Two-Time KY State Champion, Four-Time Alabama State Champion and currently the only Four-Time National Banjo Champion. He won his first National Championship at the age of 16 in 1979. Then again in 1988, 1996, 2012 and 2020.
He began playing professionally at age 13 in Chattanooga where he is from. Later, in 1988, he moved to Pigeon Forge to play music. He played for Jim and Charlie Smith's Southstar Band and Dollywood as a lead guitarist and utility musician and singer. He also played the Smoky Mountain Jubilee, Hee Haw Show, Bonnie Lou and Buster Show and many others.
Gary has been a band leader and producer for Dolly Parton. During this time he played banjo, acoustic guitar and lead guitar for her. He has played on and/or produced 7 of Dolly's albums!
